Self-assessment has a variety of purposes and benefits, and provides teachers with the ability to: asses understanding as well as knowledge, promote student-centered learning, consolidate learning, promote deeper learning, improve student engagement, and encourage students to develop judgment skills. Some assessment methods only measure students' ability to memorize, not level of understanding. Self-assessment can provide insight into student engagement with the material, and can help to identify gaps in student knowledge. In this way, self-assessment also allows students to track their progress in real time, and recognize where they excel, and what areas may require further attention. In addition to this, the process of explaining the assessment criteria to students can help promote deeper learning, as students thus have an understanding of both the subject matter and the assessment task, and can gauge how well they have met the criteria.
In order to assess their own work, students must develop their judgment skills so they can determine what is sufficient or insufficient regarding a piece of work. The ability to judge the quality of a piece of work can then be more widely applied to the work of others, such as reference material. The increased use of technology in education has made this a valuable tool for students, as the Internet has made a vast range of resources beyond the traditional print texts accessible to students. Thus, it is crucial that they possess sufficient judgment to be able to discriminate between credible and non-credible sources, both for their studies, and as a lifelong skill.
