I am interested in finding educational apps/websites that can be integrated into a classroom lesson plan or for students to explore independently. After reading Jennifer Gonzalez's Blog, 6 Ed Tech Tools to Try in 2019, I found one of her recommendations to be interesting for students to play as it welcomes diversity as well as cultural awareness. Geo Guesser places the learner in a random remote area of the world on google maps and students have to find clues to guess where they are. Students need to pay attention to landscapes, architecture as well as language, in order to form an educated guess on what country they are in. Students collect points based on how close their guess is to the correct destination.
This website exposes students to diverse areas in the world where they are able to note similarities and differences from where they currently reside. Students may become interested to learn about certain parts of the world and this could spark an interest in an area they may not have known otherwise. Furthermore, using this website allows students to become computer literate, as well as develop their researching, decision making and team work skills. Students should be given an opportunity to explore while they learn and this website allows them to do just that. Educators can use this website in multiple ways depending on what they feel is best for the class. It can be used as an introductory to a new unit or to create a friendly competition between classmates using the points earned when guessing a location. Geo Guesser is a fun and stimulating educational tool to use for students and can be explored in the classroom as well as home.
