I am a Gen Y teacher candidate learning
about the ins and outs of teaching. One of the topics that comes up in different
classes is cellphone usage in the classrooms. With the new Ford Government
banning cellphones in class unless for school work propose makes me think… is
that a good idea?
Growing up I would always get in trouble for talking in
class, so my friends and I resorted to sending notes throughout class, even if the teacher told us to stop. I think
this would be the same with students and their cellphones. Yes, it would be
nice if students can use their cellphones for school work, but how would you
regulate students using text messages, or any other type of social media.
Schools do block certain websites, but can they do that with apps as well?
Even
if the evolution of the classroom is changing to be more tech friendly, I think
we could leave cellphones out the classroom, it would just be more distracting
than beneficial, the focus should be on school computer labs and Chromebooks.
There is already an issue with taking pictures or videos of other classmates
and teachers and posting it online. Which can be avoided if the cellphones were
just put away in lockers or cellphone bins. The idea of not having cellphones
in classrooms has to be a school wide decision; you can’t have one teacher
allowing phones and another not allowing them. These are all ideas schools need
to think about before bring cellphones in the classroom.
