I first heard of Class Dojo in my third-year practicum of my undergraduate degree. I was in a grade 3 classroom and the teacher (let's call her Ms. M) used this tech tool to help motivate students, take note of their non-achievement factors (i.e., efforts in the class, attendance, classroom responsibilities, etc.), and communicate with her students and their families about their accomplishments, class updates, and homework. Class Dojo is an online website and can be accessed on computers, tablets, and smartphones.
Ms. M used the tool online with her laptop and projector. She had it opened at all times, which I found made the classroom dynamic fun, positive, and interactive. The students were engaged and it helped to increase their autonomy. They got to choose their monster character and understood what was needed of them. Ms. M would list varying responsibilities and tasks for the students to complete throughout the day, which allowed for her students to work independently when she was not teaching. Ms. M would use the timer option as well, so the students could gage their time and complete their tasks in a timely manner. What I enjoyed most were the points and goals options. Students worked towards accomplishing their objectives for the day and received points for not only succeeding in the tasks, but most importantly, their efforts and positive interactions with one another. I noticed that this helped to create a positive learning environment, where everyone worked together, felt excited and ready to learn, and increased the students' confidence.
