Gone are the days...

Or so it seems, I remember as a child being outdoors to the point where my parents had to drag me inside.  As kids we couldn't wait to get outside to pitch marbles or climb trees, the playgrounds were our oyster!  Speaking from my own personal experiences, children today seem to have a different idea of fun.  I'm not saying that kids aren't involved in physical activity but it takes a little more encouragement to get them outdoors especially if social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok have caught their eye. Sure I watched television as a kid but the way children receive and communicate today has drastically changed. For example, as kids we would buy a video game or toy and figure out how it works through trial and error.  Nowadays kids watch a video on Youtube of someone else playing the video game and by the time they actually play they know all the tricks to beat the game!  Not to mention career aspirations, ask any child in grade school what they want to be when they grow up…I am sure you will hear a YouTuber.  I challenged this rationale once and was told that not only is being a YouTuber fun but it makes a lot of money, they're right!

Educators today will have to broaden their understanding of multimodal literacies and how children interpret and understand these literacies. We are all impacted by our relationships, cultural backgrounds and experiences.  Whether we like it or not, social media platforms are shaping the way kids behave and see the world today. How can we incorporate these ideas in the classroom? How do we motivate young minds today?  Will we incorporate the old style of learning with the new or reinvent the wheel.  Maybe there's a video on YouTube…
