How They Do School in Finland

The Lien Foundation took two Singapore educators - Dr Jacqueline Chung, Academic Director at St James’ Church Kindergarten and Ms Tan Sze Wee, Executive Director at Rainbow Centre which runs three special education schools - to find out what Singapore can learn from them.

More importantly, find out how you can become a better teacher and see what can be possible - you are the instrument of change.

Episode 1: What's so Special? How is Finland’s education system preparing children for the future? What skills are they emphasizing in schools? How does a more inclusive ethos contribute to the purpose of education?

Episode 2: Teaching Twogether
Quality teachers are the hallmark of an education system. How do teachers in Finland address the diverse learning needs of children in a classroom? What are the challenges they face?

Episode 3: A School Designed for All
What does the ‘school of the future’ look like? How can the design of a school promote social interaction and create a conducive environment children with and without special needs? We visit Kalasatama Comprehensive School, which has desk-less classrooms, bouncy chairs and beanbags to provide a personalised learning experience for children.

Episode 4: Out of School, Into the World
For students with special needs, does their Finnish school experience prepare them for life after graduation? Is the transition a launch pad, or a steep cliff? Who helps them navigate their new journey? We speak to Noora, a youth with Down Syndrome who has achieved her goal of independent living.

I hope my students who will be 21st Century teachers take something from these videos and bring a little of what they've learned into their practice.  You have the power to change the world, one little bit at a time.
