Reading is a way to discover new interests. There are books on almost any topic, and all you have to do is find them! Students can learn about their interests by reading things they enjoy.
Teachers have a major role in encouraging good reading habits in their students- online reading tools are just one of those ways!
Spark Reading (Pearson resource) is a resource for student reading. Spark Reading has excellent books and has been designed with the support that helps students successfully read and become better readers. Spark Reading is a Canadian-based educational resource that prioritizes Indigenous content. This is a great way to have students practice their reading skills while learning something meaningful and relevant!
Teachers can assign students books based on their reading levels. As student reading progresses throughout the year, the teacher has the option to increase the levels. Teachers can use this resource to track and log students reading and gain information on the results of interactive activities students complete.
In order to access Spark Reading, teachers (or schools) must subscribe to the website, which is paid for. When teachers log in, they can access two main sections:
- The LIBRARY section is where teachers search for and assign books to students. Presentation tools and teaching notes can be accessed here:
- The STUDENTS section is where you manage your class list
Some of the build-in supports Spark Reading focuses on are the following:
Alternatively, another excellent reading resource is Epic reading: https://kids.getepic.com/.
Epic reading is a free resource for students to use during school hours as long as the teacher has assigned a class code to students. Epic reading has a collection of 40,000+ books! It will surely spark students' interests and encourage them to continue their reading journeys!
