📝Why is displaying student work important?📝
Ø It sends a message to students that their learning and work are important.
Ø It gives a sense of a strong community—the classroom is just as much the students' as it is the teacher's
Ø It helps each student feel deeply valued and like they belong in the classroom
Get students involved!
Have students help create these displays of their work. When they are involved in this process it allows students to:
v reflect on their work and understand that effort is more important than perfection
v refine their decision making skills and gives them an opportunity to learn from their peers
v cultivate their creative sides as well as practicing their measuring, cutting and writing skills (younger grades)
v develop strong organizational skills
DISPLAY TIPS
1) Connect to the curriculum—displays should reflect and expand student knowledge on topics discussed
2) Use all types of work from all students—honour student effort and ensure every student has their time to shine
3) Include both finished and unfinished work—this shows students we value learning and process just as much as final products/outcomes
4) Keep displays organized—regularly rotate student works to ensure the display is fresh and uncluttered.
5) Ask for student feedback—give them a say on what is displayed and how it is displayed
6) Displays should be at eye level—not YOUR eye level, the students eye level
7) Choose the right places—on bulletin boards display paintings and writing, save space on shelves for 3D dioramas
