Learning Through Games

Learning through educational games is becoming more and more popular with teachers. Some people wonder "why play games in the classroom?" Well, it is clear that when learning becomes fun and interactive, students are more likely to be engaged and retain the information. Not only do students have an easier time remembering what was learned, they also develop a love for learning!

Games aren't only effective in teaching academic skills, but they also work to teach other important skills like teamwork, critical thinking and decision-making. Through playing games in the classroom, students are able to understand new concepts and ideas, they may take on a different perspective and it also allows students to practice what they have learned already. Games can also focus students' attention and help them to develop a variety of connections with the content. Playing a range of games can increase memory due to the fact that students are having to think and act quickly.

Not to mention, having to answer questions on a worksheet or write a page of text can be quite stressful for a lot of students. Integrating fun games as a way of learning is a great way for students to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding of topics and it is also an effective classroom management tool. When students are having fun and participating as a team, they are more likely to become motivated to learn and have a positive perception of the class environment. This makes learning through games a beneficial assessment tool because students are less stressed and can therefore give a true indication of their own learning.

Games are fun! They create a sense of excitement and happiness in the classroom. Games can be individual, or they might call upon students to work collaboratively to solve problems together. However, in order for the game to be effective, it should align with specific learning outcomes.
