To say music is therapeutic would be an understatement. We experience music almost everywhere we go: the mall, on the streets, in the car, and in our headphones, of course. Why not experience music more in the classroom? Music is an integral part of the human experience – it truly serves as a language which allows us to communicate our feelings, share our thoughts and culture, and promote our values and beliefs. Educators can use music in the classroom to build a positive classroom environment and help to support student wellbeing.
Music can be incorporated into the classroom by constructing playlists which reflect the diversity seen in the classroom to create a fun ambience for students while also building a sense of belonging. Music can also be a great source of inspiration in the classroom which may help students develop and articulate their own thoughts regarding a plethora of in-class activities such as brainstorming for a poem, completing a math assignment, or while conducting a science experiment. Above all, the power of music is profound and speaks to people in a way words alone cannot – a beautiful melody is sometimes all we need.
Here is a link to one of my favourite melodies of all time. Feel free to play this in your classrooms! :)
