Students can be feeling sad, upset, anxious, angry or any other negative feeling. A way we can help them learn to self-regulate is by creating a Calm-down Corner where students can go to and refocus so they can join the learning again.
Some ideas on how to build and effectively use one in your classroom may include:
· Creating a safe and cozy place (rugs, pillows, stuffed animal)
· Providing guides to calm down (feelings/emotions chart, zones of regulation, pictures of breathing exercises)
· Offering calming books
· Providing fidget toys (pop-its, sensory toys, puzzles)
· Tablet with mindfulness apps & videos
· Sensory Stimulation (Dimmer lights, headphones for noise-cancellation)
