Independent reading improves comprehension for students and helps them develop their vocabulary. It can improve fluency by allowing students personal time to practice reading. It can also help to expose students to background knowledge of a variety of important cultural and historical events. Independent reading allows students an opportunity to practice the decoding and comprehension strategies and skills learned during class time on self-selected materials. Not only does independent reading provide additional practice time for students, but it also fosters independence.
