This post relates to OCT Standard 1: Commitment to Students and Student Learning.
During the Mental Health at School workshop, led by Gail Lalonde, she discusses differentiated classroom resources to promote everyday student wellness. It is so important that every student is provided with their method of learning to ensure they will succeed. Growing up in the digital era allows teachers to provide students with various learning methods suited to their academic ability. This is relevant to how we approach advocating for student wellness.
In my grade 2/3 placement, we practice how to self-regulate our emotions through meditation after lunch recess. It helped smoothly ease the transition from playing to focusing, especially when it came to incidents happening during recess. The School Mental Health Ontario website provides social-emotional learning posters
that provide many strategies that promote self-regulation, confidence, and calming techniques. Posting and/or sharing these strategies guides students to be independent and helps them advocate for themselves when it comes to their own wellness. Providing students with choices allows them to take more ownership of their learning. All in all, differentiation to promote student wellness allows for self-advocation, self-awareness, and self-motivation.
