The teaching conference at Niagara University has been insightful and very enlightening. I was able to hear a variety of perspectives and concepts that were very new to me. A specific presentation that truly resonated with me would have to be Jennifer Johnson’s from Captain and Poets. Jennifer touched on the topic of childhood resilience.
As someone who has always been truly interested in childhood mental health, I am grateful for the resources and strategies that she was able to provide. Something that stood out to me in her presentation was understanding the difference between endurance and resilience. For the longest time, I always thought that both concepts were the same, but they are indeed different. In this presentation, I also learned how we can use a Captain and Poet to discuss our emotions in a child friendly way. The poet is something that gives our emotions, whereas the captain controls and guides them. Overall, it was very enlightening.
Another presentation that I appreciated and will most definitely carry with me in future practice would be Student Engagement using QR codes with Shivu Ishwaran. In this workshop, we were taught how to create QR codes as well as various activities we can use in our classroom with them. I found this to not only be very engaging, but insightful as technology is vastly growing within the field of education and it is always important to remain current!
Both of these fantastic workshops would most definitely coincide with standard of practice: Commitment to Students and Student Learning. A great educator is always able to provide engaging and meaningful lessons to for their students, and with what i have learned in those workshops alone, I know that I will be able to do so for my students.
