"The Resilient Teacher: Awaken Your Flame," in this workshop Michelle really focuses on our well-being. I appreciated that she removed connection from school, work and children and just focused on our own individual well being highlighting that we cannot pour from an empty cup, she also provided us with strategies to get to our wellness and how to avoid breakdowns/ burnouts. In the end we discovered our elements and what that could potentially look like as an educator. I also appreciated that she got us up and moving, engaging with others and encouraging us to be vulnerable within a safe environment.
I learned that there is no cookie cutter to wellness and that it looks different for everyone, we really need to tune in to what we are doing and not just check off boxes, engage in wellness activities you'll return to (making them attainable and achievable) e.g., movement, breathe work journaling etc. Her motto was "You can't get it wrong when you move your way" meaning really embracing your own inner self and what works for you and not others, being comfortable in your own skin. We learned a lot of the strategies by doing. She started the class with movement, getting us to dance, clap snap and have a conversation with your elbow partner answering specific questions when the music stopped. She had had breathing and connecting with the ground, she also had us do some deep digging to the last time we were calm and happy and why we were no longer there. I feel it was meaningful because it really encouraged us, including myself to just slow down, smell the roses and enjoy the journey. This mindfulness is something I would definitely include in my classroom in the future, it is a nice way to both start and end the day. My hope is in the event a student may be overwhelmed at any point they can turn to some of their strategies to help channel through their emotions and find their calm.
