Equity and Inclusion in the Classroom

Equity and Inclusion in the Classroom

Keynote Speaker: Roy Fernandes, Superintendent of Indigenous Education and Equity,

                                                          Toronto Catholic School Board

The session on Equity and Inclusion in the classroom, led by keynote speaker Roy Fernandes, Superintendent of Indigenous Education and Equity, The session provided valuable insights on creating an environment where all students feel valued and supported. We explored strategies to address diverse learning needs, promote fairness, and ensure that every student has access to the resources they need to succeed. One key takeaway was the importance of recognizing and addressing unconscious biases in our teaching practices.

In the session, we watched several impactful videos, including The Unspoken Curriculum, which highlighted how hidden biases can influence student experiences and learning outcomes. These videos prompted deep reflection on my own practices and the subtle messages students may receive in the classroom.

This session reinforced my commitment to fostering a classroom culture where equity and inclusion are at the forefront of my teaching approach. I will incorporate what I've learned by intentionally designing lessons that reflect diverse voices and experiences, setting clear expectations for respectful dialogue, and continually assessing my own biases to ensure every student feels seen, heard, and supported. I will also prioritize creating safe spaces where students are encouraged to share their stories and identities, knowing that their unique perspectives enrich our classroom community.
