FLIP GRID - How to Use Cell Phones in the Classroom

We Can Use Phones in the Classroom! Flip Grid shows you how

There are many new laws/rules revolving around taking away phones in the classroom. It is evident that these don't help minimize the distraction due to the inability to escape a new technological society. What you can do is involve technology in a useful, educational and helpful way and this is exactly what Flip Grid does.

Flip Grid is a fun new app that essentially takes students off of non educational sites for a minute and attracts their attention in an educational way using the one thing that distracts them the most- their phones. Students often fall off track because of the distraction their phones emulate; the best way to combat this is to use that technology and make it engaging in an educational way.

Flipgrid is a website that allows teachers to create "grids" to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions, called "topics", and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.

Students already use apps such as snapchat and instagram which is natural to their everyday lives. Flip Grid is exciting for them to use because they are comfortable with the technology to begin with.

As an educator, you want students to have fun with your lessons and incorporate technology in a fun and interactive way. Students have fun making videos with new surfaced apps such as ticktock and snapchat therefore if you bring what they are interested in into the classroom, then it will resonate with them more.

Benefits:
  • Technology provides teachers with visual tools to pair with content to enhance instruction
  • Flipgrid allows students to customize their videos creatively! It can increase student engagement, work well as a formative assessment tool, and create student digital portfolios
  • Educators can use Flipgrid to further classroom conversations by assigning questions as homework assignments and then continue the conversation in class the next day
