Supporting students with Gross Motor Skills issues in the classroom:
Students with gross motor skills needs may avoid physical activities or seem uncoordinated and clumsy. Their muscle tone may seem weak and they may tire quickly. Their posture or walk may seem unbalanced and stairs may be difficult for them. Below are some strategies to support the students in the classroom:
· Implement school-based recommendations provided by occupational and physical therapists.
· Use assistive devices as prescribed for example, orthopedic chair, desk.
· Develop and teach alternate programming expectations to support the student
· Rewarding for their efforts
· Providing frequent breaks to avoid fatigue
· Specifically teach physical education skills that are at a level to be attainable by the student
Some environmental strategies to support them are:
· Assigning preferential seating, so that the student is close to supplies.
· Ensuring safety by providing adequate space for the student to walk to his/her desk
· Ensuring adequate space in the coat/locker area
· Providing elevator access if needed
· Developing a plan for emergency evacuations to ensure safety of the student
Some Assessment strategies to support the students are:
· Using assistive devices.
· Providing breaks
· Reducing demonstration expectations for physical education assessment.
