SMART Board

Although Smart Boards may be expensive and not accessible to all school districts, it has many benefits. Smart boards are a large, touch-controlled screen that works with a projector. This electronic white board has access to any resource that a computer has such as internet, YouTube, online games etc.
Teachers can use smart boards to get students to follow dances during break, easily play videos that describe a unit that was just studied and even allow their students to play interactive games. Instead of clicking a button on a mouse when playing on the computer, these students are demonstrating their knowledge to the whole class when interacting with the board.
Smart boards encourage students to write by having large pens that can be used to physically write on the board. This visual presentation can benefit both the student using it, their classmates as well as the teacher. If the teacher needs to assist particular students in the class, other students can play on the smart board and learn on their own until the teacher is available again!

The Switch To Online Learning

The switch to online learning has been a challenge for many, teachers struggling to teach their students and students struggling to get the help they need. Technology has had many benefits during these trying times. It has supported us all to continue to learn and develop new skills. The school systems have found new and innovative ways to get the curriculum taught to the students and students have also learned to become more independent in their learning.

Online learning has forced many students to develop better problem solving and critical thinking skills since there is not someone in the same room as them to help them solve the problem. However with all these benefits comes some disadvantages. Some students have not been showing up to the online classes and instead complete the work and submit it. They are lacking them interactions that they would have had in person. Some students are too afraid to ask questions since the whole class will hear what they are asking as in person they can ask without everyone listening. The lack of one on one time and the lack of engagement has affected their learning.

In my opinion the switch to online learning has its benefits but it takes away from many skills that they would learn in person such as communication, group work, social interaction, public speaking and many more.

Airline Ticket!

Using a ticket generator, I created a fun mock airline ticket! Just a little preview of some summer travels!

This could be a fun exercise for students to create a unique object using technology while exploring the Media Literacy strand of the
Language curriculum.

It took a quick google search to find an actual ticket and I tried my best to recreate one.

Word Cloud

Word Cloud is a fun online tool that allows individuals to display their thoughts and ideas in a creative way. If there is a particular topic students are learning about or a question the teacher wants to ask students, word clouds can be a great way to visually show students' responses. For example, if a student is interested in hockey they can add words to their cloud that reflect the subject. This will form a bigger cloud showing students their responses. This can allow both the teacher and students to visually see in a creative way what their peers' favourite subjects are.

This blog offers a wide range of different word cloud/word art generators that can be easily accessed to use within one's teaching practices.

Mystery Doug

Mystery Doug is an online resource where students from around the world send in questions they are curious about. Mystery Doug and his team create an interactive video answering the questions which students provided. Videos are accessible for teachers to post onto their google classrooms and student links are also provided. These videos also give teachers the chance to pause the video so that they are able to formulate their own questions. Mystery Doug is useful in the classroom because it encourages student curiosity, classroom collaboration, student engagement and inquiry.

Growth Mindset: Student Well-Being

‘Growth Mindset’ Linked to Higher Test Scores, Student Well-Being in Global Study

To access the original article on the EDUCATIONWEEK website, you can click >>>>>> Growth Mindset

Most of the teenagers participating in the world’s largest math and science test believe that they can improve their own intelligence, and the strength of this “growth mindset” is linked not just to how well they do but to their own sense of well-being.

In 2018, the Program for International Student Assessment asked some 600,000 15-year-olds from 78 countries and economies whether they believed their own intelligence is something fixed and unchangeable; disagreeing with that has been shown in decades of prior research to predict higher academic achievement through a student’s willingness to persevere in difficult tasks and recover more quickly from failure, among other things.

Nearly 2 out of 3 students who participated in PISA across all countries demonstrated a growth mindset, according to the study released Thursday. Moreover, after controlling for students’ and schools’ socioeconomic differences, students with a strong growth mindset scored significantly higher on all subjects—31.5 points in reading, 27 points in science, and 23 points in math—compared with students who believed their intelligence was fixed. In the United States in particular, where about 70 percent of students demonstrated a growth mindset, it was associated with a 60-point higher score in reading.

VR in the Classroom

Technology in the classroom is no longer a growing hot topic; it is becoming the norm and we should be embracing it with open arms. Technology enables enriching and productive teaching and learning by differentiating instructions for a diverse learning experience. It motivates students with interesting tools and it creates a group collaborative learning environment. It also enables access to academic information from multiple sources but most importantly it can allow students to visit places or observe processes that cannot be seen without online systems.

With that being said, Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming to look more and more like a feasible technology option for our teachers to use in the classroom. In order to teach 21st century learners, you must deploy 21st century technologies. Although it is still an emerging and developing technology in terms of recognizing its full potential, virtual reality offers the opportunity to step into places, roles, and experiences that were previously impossible, or at the very least, inaccessible to most. A list of reasons why we can use virtual reality in the classroom are:

·      Experience different careers first-hand

·      Time travel to events and places from the past

·      Travel to and explore places all over the world without leaving the classroom

·      Allow students to share their world with others by creating their own VR content

·      Develop empathy for communities in crisis by stepping into their shoes

·      Explore the depths of the ocean and the vastness of space

·      Explore the human body

·      Explore engineering, entertainment, medicine and real estate and other careers

·      Promote curiosity and wonder
