Five Finger Relaxation

Tracing is a great technique for clearing your mind and relaxing. This technique is a great way for children to learn to calm themselves down and clear their minds by tracing their hands. In the classroom, talk to your students about different strong emotions, and inform them of strategies for when they feel a strong emotion, for example, taking a deep breath. When students are stressed, angry, or sad, guide their hands, show them how to trace around each finger and take deep breaths. As they inhale, trace up the finger, and as they exhale, trace down the finger, and practice this for deep 10 breaths.

This technique helps keep the mind from wandering and corresponds with deep breathing. This is a great tool to use because children can practice this technique beyond the classroom. Remind your students that if they are ever feeling these emotions at home or another environment, all you need is a pen and paper. This is a great took in helping children relax
