Teaching online can be a challenge with younger students. Young learners love experiments and hands-on activities. Teaching online limits the capability of hands-on learning as the majority of students will not have the resources/materials for each learning activity. As an Early Childhood Educator working in a kindergarten classroom, I find it difficult shifting from in person learning to synchronous learning as I have no experience using the current online model. I focused on keeping students engaged while making their learning experience online enjoyable. It can be challenging for children aged 4-5 to sit in front of a computer screen for the majority of their school day. I decided to incorporate science experiments twice a week as students looked forward to new and interesting learning activities. What's great about these four science experiment videos is they are able to be conducted at home and school as most items you require are found in your household.
Before doing the experiments I would ask students 3 questions:
1. Beginning of the science experiment: what do you think is going to happen?
2. During Experiment: What have you observed?
3. Final Results of Experiment: What happened and what did you enjoy about the experiment?
I highly recommend educators to try these fun educational videos with younger students.
