Literacy in Kindergarten

Literacy is a very important thing to learn. It is a skill that we always use in our lives and there is always something to be learned. Children go into school knowing some literacy. They are most likely able to communicate with others, knows some or all of their alphabet etc. It is our job as kindergarten teachers to enhance those basic skills in a fun and interactive way. We teach letter recognition, letter sounds, blending sounds, how to write & start to read.

One of my favourite things to teach in kindergarten is literacy. It is one of my favourite things because it can be incorperated in all areas of the classroom (ie. dramatic play centre,  reading centre, block centre, art centre ext.) Teaching literacy isn't always just sitting on the carpet and teaching a lesson.

Some of my favourite literacy activities/way I put literacy out in my classroom are:
- Morning sign in (recognizing your name)
- Write the room
-Making letters out of play dough
- Literacy lessons (Jolly phonics, adding games)
- Focus on one letter a week
-Sight words
-Matching uppercase & lowercase
-Journals
-Centers
