Classroom Rules - What You Need to Know

Classroom rules need to be set up early on…

The foundation of any classroom starts with the classroom rules that are created. These rules teach students what is acceptable and what is not. Teachers should set up classroom rules on the first day of school to guide everyone’s behavior within the classroom.  Teachers need to make sure their students understand the rules that have been set up mutually by the teacher and students. These rules foster a learning space where students feel safe, welcomed and respected at all times. Having classroom rules leads to better student behavior and better learning among students.

Some reasons to have classroom rules

1.Promotes safety: Students are aware of what is considered effective behavior and what is not. The safety of all students is promoted through classroom rules as it’s an emotionally, physically and mentally safer place for students to grown in and learn. For example, effective rules are against fighting, bullying, or other dangerous activities.

2.Promotes effective teaching and learning: Teachers learn to manage their classroom better as rules help the teacher maintain class routines and student expectations. Students achieve greater success if teachers are able to manage classrooms effectively as rules lead to better focus, behavior, and attitude amongst students.

3.Produces responsible students: Rules teach children what is expected of them and the consequences of behavior that is considered negative. These rules discourage students from engaging in behavior that is considered negative and one that produces consequences. Classroom rules help develop students who are responsible individuals.

Classroom rules I would like to incorporate in the future

1.     Respect each other and value different ideas.

2.     Be understanding and open-minded. This is a safe welcoming space.

3.     Be prepared with materials and be organized.

4.     Listen to the teacher and follow directions.

5.     Raise your hand to speak up.

6.     Have fun!

All educators should be encouraged to set up classroom rules on the very first day of class.
