The Art of Teaching using Media

Prior to the 21st century our education system was heavily placed on the pen to paper instruction. With the inclusion of technology in the classroom in correlation with teaching techniques such as using multiple methods, building a classroom presence and creating ethical expectations we have the capabilities to engage our students in an abundance of ways. Today, we know that the use of technology has a great advantage for teachers who wish to use certain pedagogies while instructing their students.

The first thing that comes to mind when we discuss media in the classroom is the use of YouTube. Using video clips or short films to interact with students that create open discussion and contrasting perspectives is great and an excellent way for students to learn while also feeling they are 'watching tv' or 'having fun' in class.

Other ideas for incorporating media within the class environment and for pedagogical practices include:

  • Using a class Twitter. This can be used for student interaction, fast notifications and easy to access information
  • Creating a Blog for students to share their new ideas, experiences and theories with peers
  • Incorporating Facebook's services for creating interest groups and live presentations for sharing knowledge and interacting with students
  • Constructing an interactional platform through email, with parents and guardians, for acquiring open communication and class involvement
  • Building a class Pinterest board to share new ideas, common interests and optional activities to keep students engaged and inspired

In conclusion, using media strategies to keep pupils encouraged and engaged is an excellent way to grow your teaching pedagogies and use resources outside of the classroom. With our ever evolving world and new technologies being invented each and every day the possibilities to include media in your educational practices are endless.
