The difference between invitation and provocation

I always struggled to understand the difference between provocation and invitation to play. One day, I saw a discussion on a Facebook group where one of the educators said: "if you know the outcome before the activity begins, it is an invitation. If you don't know where it will lead, it is a provocation."

Hopefully, this will make your planning a little easier.

Here are the main differences:

Invitation:

  • a way to trigger children's interests
  • purposefully created with the curriculum in mind
  • materials are arranged to attract children's attention
  • some teacher's direction
  • encourages students to explore a concept
  • encourages exploration and discovery

Provocations:

  • enables independent thinking
  • are based on children's interests
  • provides a variety of materials and activities
  • open-ended activities without much guidance
  • provides opportunities for further learning
  • It extends knowledge and encourages critical thinking.
