I always struggled to understand the difference between provocation and invitation to play. One day, I saw a discussion on a Facebook group where one of the educators said: "if you know the outcome before the activity begins, it is an invitation. If you don't know where it will lead, it is a provocation."
Hopefully, this will make your planning a little easier.
Here are the main differences:
Invitation:
- a way to trigger children's interests
- purposefully created with the curriculum in mind
- materials are arranged to attract children's attention
- some teacher's direction
- encourages students to explore a concept
- encourages exploration and discovery
Provocations:
- enables independent thinking
- are based on children's interests
- provides a variety of materials and activities
- open-ended activities without much guidance
- provides opportunities for further learning
- It extends knowledge and encourages critical thinking.
