Integrating Social Emotional Learning in the Classroo

Learning how to recognize and manage our emotions is so important, not only for adults but for children as well. This has definitely been made clear in the past few years! Although social emotional learning (SEL) isn't a delegated subject like math or science, there are still ways to integrate it into the curriculum. Through cultivating a sense of empathy, self-awareness and feelings of safety and inclusiveness in the classroom, social emotional learning can help students become more equipped to deal with problems that affect them on a personal level, which will likely make them more willing to participate in school.

Social emotional learning (SEL) is the process of fostering self-awareness, self-control and interpersonal skills that are critical for growth and success in school, work and life. Individuals with strong social and emotional skills are on track to building positive relationships and coping with life challenges in healthy ways.

There are many ways that teachers can incorporate social emotional learning in the classroom every day. Checking in with how students are feeling each day is a great way to teach children how to become self-aware and recognize the emotions that they are experiencing. Using books to talk about social-emotional themes with your class is also a great tool. Stories such as Have you Filled a Bucket Today by Carol McCloud teach about the power of using kind and encouraging words. Reading this book aloud to the class can even lead to learning activities where students can write positive messages to each other, creating community and inclusivity in the classroom and encouraging students to build positive relationships.

Having a dedicated place in your classroom where students can go to calm down when negative emotions are running high is also a helpful teaching resource. It is a way for students to learn how to regulate negative emotions and feel validated in those emotions, rather than ashamed. The space can encourage coping skills such as journaling, listening to calming music, deep breathing, reading and art.
