Childhood Obesity

As of 2019, over 150 million children in the world are obese and this number will increase to 206 million by 2025. Childhood overweight and obesity has been rising steadily in Canada in recent decades. Many adolescents do not outgrow this problem and in fact, many continue to gain weight throughout the years (Statistics, childhood obesity foundation, 2021). 

 

Lack of physical activity and not eating proper nutritional foods leads to childhood obesity and being overweight. Here is a list of great resources for children and their families that educates them on nutrition, physical activity and local resource programs that are available to children and families: 

 

Hands up Toronto

This is a Charity Organization that is free for all families and children that require assistance. Grocery care packages delivered right too the families door which includes: breakfast, lunch and dinner packages. As well as provides access to a variety of nutritional foods inclusive of fresh fruit and vegetables that will be delivered right to your door each month. 

                                 

Longo's Grocery Store: Cooking Camp Classes

This is a program that is offered by local grocery store Longo's. It offers virtual cooking classes for children ages 6 and older. This involves cooking with kitchen equipment, appliances and tools. Children will be required to melt, cook, bake or chop ingredients while learning about the benefits of different food groups. 


NutriKids: Family Nutritionist

Meeting with a family nutritionist provides for family services with infant and toddler nutrition, allergy and intolerance weight and specialized diets for children and their families. 


Sporting Programs: Littlekickers

This soccer program offers four different classes that are tailored to each age group of children and provides a positive introduction to sports in a fun and educational environment.
