Throughout my schooling career, I have come across various resources and tools that have been used to progress students learning. One resource I have particularly enjoyed is the "Learning A-Z" website, more specifically, the "Reading A-Z" and "Raz-Kids" features. With limited funding, it can be challenging for teachers to obtain books for students that they will actually enjoy and see themselves reflected in. Reading A-Z allows teachers to easily print and assemble levelled reading texts. At my grade 2/3 placement, one of my ongoing tasks was to print these books and organize them by level. Students had many books and could always find something that actually sparked their interests.
However, my only concern with Reading A-Z is that the books are not durable as they are printed on regular printer paper. Therefore, they can easily be written on, torn, bent and will need to be replaced – making them not as environmentally friendly. A solution to this issue is Raz-Kids. Similar to an e-reader, this feature allows students to read books online. Students have the option of listening to the book, reading it themselves and listening to the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. One of my favourite features is the five reading-comprehension questions at the end of the book. After students complete one of these three tasks (listening, reading, questions), they gain points that can be seen by their teacher. At my placement, once students accumulate a certain number of points, they can cash it in for a small prize. I love this idea as it strongly encourages students to read.
