As reflective educators, it is important that we consider how to incorporate inclusive and diverse space for each of our learners. As an English Language Learner (ELL), transitioning to an English speaking classroom can feel intimidating and overwhelming, especially with the lack of consistent 1:1 support. Nevertheless, teachers can optimize on our current landscape of teaching, and create multiple opportunities for ELL students to use technology as a means to engage, collaborate, and participate in the learning space.
Google Translate is an effective tool that creates limitless gateways for communication between ELL learners and teachers to excel together. The Google Translate platform is separated into 3 tools: Conversation, Translation of Text, and Upload.

Through conversation, the app allows for instantly translated speech into another/preferred language out loud. While students familiarize themselves with the English language, the conversation feature will allow for more seamless conversations between teachers and students in real-time. Through the translation of text feature, teachers can seamlessly upload documents, worksheets, and slides to Google Classroom for ELL students to follow along on their ChromeBooks or during a remote learning task. As for the Upload feature, students can confidently upload translated copies of their work and teachers can translate their submissions just as easily for effective assessment.
For aspiring and current educators, Google Translate can be the starting point for building trusting and resilient relationships between teachers and ELL students. By prioritizing a simple tech tool like Google Translate, students have the capacity to feel valued, seen, and acknowledged which will contribute to their academic success for years to come.
