As new teachers, we may find ourselves asking: "How can I better myself as an educator everyday?" In order to receive those answers, we must dive deep into what exactly ignites that passion of teaching, and what made us want to be teachers in the first place. Below are 5 ways you, as a teacher, can better yourself as someone who works in the academic field.
1. Never Stop Learning - Aside from teaching your students, as an educator, you are also learning new life skills everyday. These can be displayed from your students or even fellow colleagues.
2. Celebrate Learning as a System - One student's form of learning may be different from others, therefore, it is our responsibility as educators to cater to all of our students' needs and methods of learning. We must be mindful of all learning types.
3. Collaborate Meaningfully with Everyone - We must make sure we are always engaged with all students, and that means emphasizing in the classroom that all questions are not wrong ones! As educators, we must be available when a student is in need of extra assistance and remain patient.
4. Approach the Classroom in your Students Best Interest - Our students are the reason we are in the classroom, meaning we must always have their best interest at heart. We can do so by accommodating those who need it and allowing for them to receive the extra help they may need.
5. Reflect, Reflect, Reflect! - Mistakes are okay and we must learn from them. Nobodies perfect! Even teachers who have been teaching for decades. Your colleagues are there to assist and guide you when in need, therefore, we as educators must be able to reflect and take constructive criticism.
