Azul Terronez shares the responses he gathered on What Makes a Good Teacher Great?
Over 24 years from 26 000 students at eight schools. As a future educator, I listened and thought about how his responses resonate with what I think makes a good teacher great. I thought about who were the great teachers in my life and how can I take what I learned from those lessons and apply them to my career in teaching.
What Makes a Good Teacher Great? Quotes from the video:
" A great teacher eats apples" - Apple as a symbol of student-teacher relationship built on trust.
" A great teacher is chill" - A great teacher doesn't take themselves too seriously. many students like a teacher who is calm in all situations and doesn't get overwhelmed easily
" A great teacher thinks like a kid but acts like an adult" - Understanding children's way of thinking. Students often convey their feelings to adults in subtle ways, and great teachers are able to pick up on that.
Understanding the difference between " A great teacher loves to teach" vs " A great teacher loves to learn" - Students like to see their teachers learn in front of them. A teacher who demonstrates the journey that is learning is valuable to students.
"A great teacher isn't a teacher" - Great teachers don't just live in their classrooms, they're out in the world! Students appreciate teachers who demonstrate their knowledge in a way that resonates and makes sense to students.
"A great teacher understands that students have a life outside of school" - Every student experiences their own set of struggles and adversities outside of the classroom, and great teachers acknowledge those problems.
"A great teacher helps students if they notice a struggle" - Don't make assumptions about what kids can and cannot do. Rather, observe and push students to succeed and help them when they're stuck.
"A great teacher sings" - Great teachers make themselves humble before their students and take risks. Trust that they're going to be supported if they fail.
