Incorporating Self-Regulation into the Classroom

Self-expression and learning how to understand our emotions, and how to cope with our feelings, helps develop social and emotional learning. In the teaching profession, helping kids understand their emotions is very important, as it can improve the learning and environment, and enhance student learning. Checking in is an effective skill that not only promotes self-regulation but is an effective strategy that prepares students to learn. This can consist of asking students how they are feeling, and providing support if students are not feeling their greatest. 

Over the years, self-regulation has become a popular discussion, as the importance of mental health has grown, regulation in the classroom has too. In the article "Integrating the Zones of Regulation into your Classroom", the author provides further insight on the benefits, and ways to incorporate the zones of regulation into your class. 

The zones of regulations are shown to be a reflective exercise that allows students to express how they feel and helps with teaching students how to communicate their feelings. The article provides many examples of how teachers can implement this strategy into their classroom. Examples such as a checking in board, allowing students to express which zone they are in (green is happy, red is mad, blue is sad, yellow is tired, etc.) Read alouds, or movies such as inside out, are also reflected on the zones of regulation. This can help to teach students effective strategies on how to better understand their emotions, and how this can impact their behaviour, and overall day. 

In conclusion, the zones of regulation promote self-awareness and teach children how to express their emotions. This can enhance social emotional learning, and communication.
