Powerful Three-Day Seminar at NUO

In the three productive but demanding days of the NUO seminar, I could work intensively with great ideas, get to know colleagues, and reflect on my personal and professional development. The sessions were so worthwhile, with such valuable ideas, good discussion, and illuminating learning. I'm deeply grateful to all NUO staff who must have worked so hard to put it all together — thank you!

The most appropriate thing from day one of the seminar for me was to learn more about Mohawk approaches to sharing knowledge. I valued the way how highly esteemed it was to witness teaching founded upon empathy, stories, and collective community. It made me think about building a classroom community that educates the whole human person, and not just the "student." I also liked the workshop on the final session of How to Get a Job on Education — the examples, advice, and blunt guidance boosted my confidence as a teacher and job candidate.

A New Approach to Holocaust Education workshop on the seminar's second day was a heart-wrenching unlearning and relearning experience. It challenged my assumptions and revealed new approaches to this sensitive topic with clarity, understanding, and intention. Presenting my teaching portfolio to a principal in a mock interview was another rewarding experience — it made teaching real and possible.

Finally, on the last day of the seminar, I was privileged to present to the group and my peers our research on Culturally Responsive Classrooms. Being able to present our ideas on culturally responsive classrooms and subject them to peer criticism was insightful. I also enjoyed the session Unmasking Hate: Recognizing and Addressing Anti-Semitism in Ontario Schools. This session was that eye-opener and accorded me an increased appreciation of history, identity, and the necessity of combating hate through information and love.

These three days rooted me deeper, enlightened me, and left me optimistically looking toward the future about what education will see. Thank you again, NUO, for this life-altering and one-of-a-kind experience.
