During this workshop, we explored the distinctions between Additional Qualifications (AQs) and Additional Basic Qualifications (ABQs), gaining valuable insight into how these courses can support our ongoing professional growth and enhancing job opportunities.
We learned that ABQs allow us to expand our teachable subject areas (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior), while AQs focus more on developing specific teaching skills or knowledge in particular areas. We were provided with different types of courses offered at different schools and which ones could be useful. Debbie emphasized that we had to choose carefully, because once a course is added as a qualification, we cannot remove it. Another point was that if we wished to take Intermediate/Senior ABQs, they should be in different subjects to maximize our subject areas. A key takeaway was understanding how the Qualifications Evaluation Council of Ontario (QECO) assesses our qualifications to place us on the appropriate level of the salary grid, which highlighted the importance of strategic course selection.
The session also offered practical advice on choosing AQs and ABQs that align with our undergraduate backgrounds, such as ensuring prerequisites are met for Senior level ABQs, to maximize both our qualifications and opportunities in the job market. I have decided to pursue my I/S qualifications and I may switch into secondary rather than elementary. Although I enjoy elementary, I was initially trying to apply to secondary for multiple reasons. With this new information I've acquired, I feel more encouraged to get my qualifications, not only to get to A4, but to also be able to teach biology, a subject I love! This session was meaningful and significant to me because it gave me so much knowledge on ways to elevate my skill set throughout my career outside of just ABQs. It will allow me to take a different path from being a traditional homeroom teacher if I wish to do so.
