Singapore Math - A Comprehensive Framework of Simplicity

The C-P-A Approach to Teaching Math ... It just makes sense!

A comprehensive framework of the mathematics curriculum summarizes the essence of mathematics teaching and learning in schools. The learning of mathematics at all levels involves more than the basic acquisition of concepts and skills. It also crucially involves an understanding of the underlying mathematical thinking, the general strategies of problem solving and positive attitudes to and appreciation of mathematics as an important and powerful tool in everyday life.

This innovative and engaging approach to teaching math focuses on problem solving, deep understanding and the use of model drawing to drive the acquisition and application of mathematical skills. "Singapore Math" teaches the same content as traditional mathematics programs, just in a way that emphasizes understanding and flexible thinking. It teaches children how and why math works, so they will be better able to use math in real-life situations.  It just makes sense!  The essence is that the student goes from the Concrete (C) to the Pictorial (P) to the Abstract (A) - hence the C-P-A Approach ... It's so easy, it's sad that some of us just don't get it!  Sadder still is that some who do get it, try to make math so complicated and unreachable to commonsense and logic. Teaching mathematics is about the kids, end of story.
