Future Education Technology

Technology has evolved and continues to evolve in every facet of our society, including the education industry. Students today have grown up with internet and connected devices in the classroom and at home which has changed the way we learn. Educational technology is always giving students new tools that help their learning.

Tablets in the Classroom

Tablets are the most common use of technology in our classrooms because they are small, portable, small enough for a single student, while also large enough to use in pairs or small groups. Tablets are incredibly versatile and great for the classroom environment. According to 2015 Pearson study of more than 2000 students between grades 4-12 illustrated that 78% of elementary students used tablets in their school work in 2014 which was a 12% jump from the previous year. In the same time it had increased from 58% to 69% in middle school students and from 42% to 49% in high school students. In the same study 9 out of 10 students believe that tablets will change the way students learn in the future. As educators it is important to try and find ways to implement tablets in our curriculum. Doing so could have a massive impact on our students in teaching them technological literacy and expanding their opportunities to learn in fresh ways.

Assistive Technology

Assistive technology empowers students, especially those with disabilities to help level the playing field in the classroom. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) 7 million students in the U.S. receive special education services. Assistive technology has so many avenues and devices that are available to help a whole range of students with disabilities obtain the support they need. One trend associated with assertive technology is with input devices. These allow students with disabilities to use computers and tablets equipped with modified keyboards with larger buttons, cursors they can manipulate with their mouth or feet, and other capabilities. Speech to text has also allowed students with low motor skills obtain the help they need. As educators if we use these technologies we can help level the playing field for our students who other wise would not get a fair chance in the classroom.
